Communist Party of Slovakia (KSS) - Zvolen, 2010

The text reads: "For 20 years they promised and they stole" (meaning the capitalist politicians of Slovakia), "The Communists provided for the people", "Heart in the right place". The Communist party never takes more than one or two percent of the total vote in Slovakia, which is low compared to the results of the Communist party of the Czech republic which typically takes about 15% of the vote. This difference has developed since 1993 because in the Czech Republic the Communists receive protest votes from angry voters, poor pensioners and votes from Czech nationalists, while in Slovakia parties such as the SNS dominate this part of the electorate, leaving no room for the Communists to gather support.

Slovak National Party (SNS) - Zvolen, 2010

The text reads: "So that our women don't have to cry". This image is loaded with all kinds of moody symbolism, and is intended to show that Slovakia is surrounded by enemies (Hungarians, Roma, perhaps the European Union itself) and that Slovaks should fear these perceived outside enemies and be ready to fight them to protect the nation. The woman has her arms folded in prayer and the light from the windows behind suggests a church (with a leering male face at the window, the 'external threat' personified). The woman seems to personify Mother Slovakia (the nation itself) which must be defended against external enemies (by Slovak male chauvinism). The dark and spooky tone of the image is intended to remind Slovak voters that they should be afraid of a future without a solid Slovak identity, and the best way to protect themselves is to vote for radical nationalists like the SNS who will ruthlessly defend their interests against outsiders.

Direction-Social Democracy (SMER) - Zvolen, 2010

The text reads: "For people, for Slovakia". Robert Fico appeared in many billboards across the country pictured with a local SMER candidate or cabinet minister.
